Trafalgar Park to be graveyard More than 400 white crosses will fill the embankment of Trafalgar Park for the centenary Anzac Day service, making it a giant graveyard for a day. This Friday is Anzac Day and it will be held as normal at Anzac Park in central Nelson, but next year will be the 100th anniversary of the day soldiers from New Zealand and Australia stormed the Turkish coastal town of Gallipoli and the Nelson Returned

Nelson RSA president Barry Pont says they are working with Nelson City Council to host a special service at Trafalgar Park, including white crosses to mark each of the 420 Nelsonians who died in the First World War. The Mapua Easter Fair is often regarded as one of the biggest one-day events in Nelson, with thousands of people visiting, even some from outside the region. But with wet weather still lingering on Sunday morning, the number of event-goers was well down this year, with some stall-holders questioning whether it should have been moved to Easter Monday – that was until

the sun finally broke through in the afternoon to attract hundreds more people. The fair raises money for the local school and playcentre, and there was still plenty of support from raincoat-wearing event-goers armed with umbrellas in morning, before a larger crowd showed up in the afternoon, adding to the takings. An overall tally of how much was raised was yet to be confirmed.

Mens shed could come to Nelson A “menzshed” is set to open in Nelson. The successful concept has been a hit in Richmond with so many members they’re keen for Nelson to start one to take its backlog. And now the founders of the Nelson version are hoping to flush out Nelson men who may be interested in being involved. The “menzshed” was founded in Australia but has spread throughout New Zealand and gives locals a chance to work in a communal shed, and pass along their skills to others. Although men from all ages are members it’s been particularly popular with retired men who may have downsized and no longer have a shed of their own. It’s also a hit with younger

guys wanting to learn some new skills off some, usually, very skilled people. Graeme O’Brien says Founders Heritage Park would be an ideal location but they’re still hunting for somewhere to go. “It’s a really good initiative and it’s amazing that Nelson doesn’t have one. I thought it would be a good way to bring a lot of the community groups together.” He says the idea for a Nelson shed was a spin off from a meeting about a “time bank” called COSH and the two initiatives will be discussed at a public meeting, at which a committee for each will also be elected. The meeting is at Lambretta’s on May 13 at 7pm.

Wind leaves family home in ruins The Hobbs family weren’t home when a massive heritage tree crashed through their home on Thursday, so didn’t see its incredible fall, but thanks to the video-skills of Derek Sivers, hundreds of thousands around the world did. The massive tree was one of hundreds that were ripped out of the ground during high winds last Thursday and Friday. The tree falling was captured by Derek and has become a Youtube sensation, but for the Hobbs family and two of their neighbours, the tree represents a destroyed home. Jules Hobbs says he was at work at the Nelson City Council when he got the call about the tree from one of his neighbours. He rushed home to find it had fallen on top of his bedroom and that of his teenage daughter, destroying clothes, furniture and everything else in the rooms. But he says the fact his family wasn’t home and that their two cats and four chickens survived is the main reason to smile. “If it had happened an hour earlier my eldest daughter would have most likely been in her room and if it happened at night three of us would have

been killed and my youngest daughter would be alone.” The incident was one of hundreds facing Nelsonians on Thursday and Friday with trees down all over the city. The Brook, Victory, Stoke and Tahunanui areas were all hit hard and the sound of chainsaws echoed through the city on Friday morning. It wasn’t just trees hit either. On Friday morning hospital staff realised a copper section of roof had blown off in the middle of the night and was dan-

gling over the edge. Patients in ICU – which was directly under the section of roof – were moved as the Fire Service and Police waited for a strong gust to blow it off. Fortunately it held long enough for a crane to be brought in and slowly bring it down. Station officer Craig Davies says the main concern was for the patients in the hospital and what would happen if it did blow down. The region also received over 600mm of rain in just a few days at the end of last week.

Now is the chance for Nelsonians to have their say on the city’s car parking rules, with feedback opening on how it should be manged. Public feedback opened last week by Nelson City Council on how parking in the city’s three main CBD areas – central Nelson, Tahunanui, and Stoke – should be managed in the future. Planning and Regulatory Committee

chair, Brian McGurk, says smart parking management is critical to the successful growth and development of Nelson. “At the council we are thinking about the now and the future. Do we have enough parking today in Nelson CBD, Tahunanui and Stoke and is it in the right places? What will we need as we grow and change? These are questions

we want to put to the community to help us form a parking strategy.” Feedback is sought on a list of possible actions to manage the parking supply and demand. Singers prepare for national competition The Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus is putting on a show in Richmond this Sunday, just two weeks before heading off to the national women’s barbershop singing competition in Auckland. As a women’s barbershop chorus, Nelson Bays Harmony has been together for 20 years, and most years it competes at the national competition. This year the group will compete in the open entertainment section, and use the competition to meet with several hundred other singers. The current group involves 34 members with ages ranging from 19 to 79. Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus will be performing at Club Waimea this Sunday from 4pm, which will be the dress rehearsal for the contest, and it will also feature a competing quartet, the local men’s barbershop group, a ukulele duo and another local singer. Entry is by gold coin donation, with the money used to help fund the trip to the national competition.

Truck crashes into kids’ play area

A truck carrying tonnes of timber, that went hurtling into a home with four pre-schoolers inside, was too close for comfort and frightened neighbours say it should be a lesson to speeding truck drivers. Home owner Jill Riddle was home with the four pre-schoolers she cares for under the Porse home education umbrella and says she heard the truck smash into her front yard. “I heard the skidding of the tyres first and then I heard something like thunder, but double the sound. It was really, really loud.” She says because it was a wet day the children were inside with her, but the front yard does have children’s equipment that is used on sunny days “I put my head out and saw the mess and then I asked the children to line up and we went upstairs. We were having a look but it didn’t really register to me until a neighbour came over worried that the children weren’t safe,” says Jill. “The children were all quite fearful of what the sound was and we are going to use this as a learning story that things like this can happen.” The truck was carrying two trailer loads of timber and took out a

Neighbour Shelly Marsh says the accident should be a warning to truck drivers to slow down on that stretch of road. “As far as I’m concerned, when they come round that corner they hit it too fast.” Jill says she’d recently put up a safety fence around the property and has now relocated the play area to a safer place around the side of the house and back section. “I never dreamt that anything like this would happen. I’m quite fearful, even myself, to go anywhere near the front section now because this is the second accident now on this bit of road. I wouldn’t wish it on anybody else, it was frightening to think of ‘what if ’, and I’m just so grateful that everyone was safe and that no one was hurt.”

Nelson shoppers will soon be serenaded by two public pianos in the CBD after three local music enthusiasts took the idea to the council. Joe Gibbons, Joe Rifici and Neville Claughton have seen examples of community pianos all over the world and believed it was a great idea for Nelson too. Last week Nelson City Council’s community services committee agreed to the proposal to allow two pianos to be put on the city’s streets. The pianos will be free for anyone to play and will be brought in at night and watched over by the Sprig & Fern on Hardy St and TSB bank on Trafalgar St. The concept will be on trial for 12 months and councillor Pete Rainey says he thinks it’s a good idea. “Public pianos have proven very popular in cities all around the world. It’s great that members of our community want to bring them into Nelson’s streets. The council is happy to be able to accommodate their vision and I’m sure the pianos will bring a new dimension to our city centre that people will enjoy.” Neville Claughton, owner of Mr Music, has provided the pianos and will continue to maintain them after they are made available to the public. “Anything that attracts tourists has got to be good,” he says. “I was in Melbourne a few weeks ago and if you go to the main street on a Sunday afternoon there’s music happening everywhere. It just brings a vibe and it’s fun as well.” Nelson can expect to see at least one of the pianos out on the street within the next few weeks.

One war, three different Navys When Bill Boyce joined the New Zealand Navy as an 18 year old in 1943 the world was at war and he was "keen for a bit of excitement". Bill served with three different Navys over a two and a half year period in the Pacific and in the Atlantic Ocean, around Europe. But his time as a seaman didn't start that well. On his first night in the Navy, on board the HMS Tamaki, Bill got in trouble for joking with a fellow crew member and was made to run around the parade deck for hours until they asked the officers if they could stop. It was a rough introduction but he says he enjoyed the discipline on board and his time there. After some time training around Auckland, Bill went to the Solomon Islands in the Pacific and served on the HMS Kiwi, which later destroyed a Japanese submarine by ramming it. While in the Pacific he received a letter from his mother that said his older brother Peter, who he hadn’t seen for around four years, was in a place that, he wrote, “rhymed with her name”, as they couldn’t say where they were in letters back home. Bill guessed that he was in the same Pacific

Bill arrived to see his brother working on

the wing of a plane. When he walked up to him, with eight months’ worth of facial hair, Peter said “I recognise your face”. To which Bill replied: “I hope so, if you don’t no one will.” Bill later requested to be drafted into the Royal Navy to see more action and was sent to Britain in 1944. There he saw, first-hand, ships being bombed and sunk and for a short time joined a Canadian destroyer as they were short of men. That meant he had to join their Navy as well, his third in just a few months. By the time he arrived back in Europe his ship was sent to the Northern Atlantic but it was just as the war was ending and he didn’t see any fighting there. The experience was one that he enjoyed, despite the fact he’s anti-war. “It gave me an experience and discipline. I enjoyed the mateship and the sea but I don’t like the glorifying of war that sometimes goes on. People talk about it like it’s a good thing, but I don't want to see another lot of our boys sent to be slaughtered." Bill will by the VIP guest of the Nelson RSA at Anzac Park this Friday and says he’s looking forward to it but can't understand the fuss being made about him. RSA president Barry Pont can, saying Bill's story is incredible and he deserves his place as a VIP.

Tuesday 15 April: Poppy Day has been a part of the New Zealand calendar since 1922 and all the money raised this year is staying in the region and going towards supporting ex-service people. Volunteers were out in Nelson on Thursday collecting donations, but the total amount raised is still unknown and won’t be totalled until after Anzac day. It is expected that the total will be down from previous years because of the poor weather that Poppy Day encountered. Tuesday 15 April: Last weekend was the Kartsport New Zealand National Sprint Championships in Blenheim and Nelson saw eight drivers head over to compete against the country’s best. Although none of the drivers were able to make it into the top 3 in any of their classes, Matt Butchard received their best result with 5th place in the KZ2 class and Jarod Fisher was next with 8th place in the Junior Restricted Class.

Local iwi on final leg of treaty settlement Local iwi are celebrating the final step of an “historic” treaty settlement. Last week saw the third reading of the Treaty of Waitangi Settlement Bills marking the final political step of the settlement process. The 70 day enactment period will complete the process and the final sign off from the Governor General and the distribution of the agreed settlement will follow. The settlement represents a reported $200 million for iwi across the Top of the South and will have a massive impact

on the region. Last week Nelson mayor Rachel Reese hailed the milestone. “I applaud the intergenerational dedication and determination of all those involved with the negotiations. It has been a long process but to reach this final stage is momentous and no doubt very satisfying. The team work it has taken to get here is admirable. “We acknowledge that with this and other legislative changes, the way councils engage with Māori will change and that provides more exciting

opportunities to work together.” She says she’d like to see an “appropriate community celebration” for the milestone. “The Treaty of Waitangi settlement represents a huge opportunity for all local iwi to invest in the future of their people and their wider community. We, as a the council, want to continue to work closely with our local iwi and will welcome any new opportunities to work together on specific projects and initiatives as they arise,” she says.

Tuesday 8 April: St John has received some really good feedback after their request for more volunteers, says St John’s Francine Currie. “It was a really good time to have it with the first responders parade. It’s all tied in together and made a big impact on people which is one of the reasons they have rung up so promptly.” Around 10 people have put their hands up and shown an interest in becoming St John volunteers within the Tasman area and St John are grateful for their support.

Cycle trail: Ten years ago we did the Otago rail trail, in four days we only came across about half a dozen other people on the trail. Last year we were back in the area, but not riding, everywhere we were in sight of the trail we saw bikes. Also the amount of accommodation available has increased markedly. I would like to see the $600,000 reinstated and the trail finished. The money could come from not building the new retail building at Mapua. The reason for the construction is to use the spare section for rental income.The cost is $1.2 million, how long is that going to take to recoup? Murray. This week I took a gamble. Not a very big one, just to be on the safe side, but a gamble none the less. I have been toying with the idea of growing veges in tubs. Well there is a limit to how long a person can “Toy About” so I found a decent-sized tub, one deep enough in which to grow some nice long carrots. Next, a careful troll along the carrot seed shelf until I found a variety that suggested sowing “Spring to early autumn” Well maybe it’s not quite early autumn [that is where the gamble comes in] but it will have to do anyway. We have no idea what the weather will throw at us do we, but here goes. I filled the tub with fine friable soil, [carrots need that.] Then a bit of aged pea straw, more soil, some sheep pellets, a sprinkling of Neem Tree Oil granules (which is a soil conditioner and natural plant food), and followed with a topping of more fine soil. The seeds were sown very finely, and lightly covered with more fine soil. So there is my gamble, if you like to call it that. There is plenty of seeds left in the packet so spring will see another sowing. If the weather gets chilly I can always shift the tub to a more favourable situation. autumn which is Nature’s planting season and if attended to now a lovely spring garden will be your reward. • Check out the rhododendrons making their way into stores now. Planted now, they will have time to settle in during the autumn weeks and have a head start on the plants that are put in during the spring. • Get active with the spring bulbs available now. Plant, plant, plant for a lovely spring treat. If the winter is a dull one we will need a bit of cheering up at the end of it. • There is still time to sow many winter vegetables. However if you are impatient, plant seedlings instead. • Check out winter flowering annuals, and potted colour and plant now while the soil is warm and moist. • Use VaporGuard when planting seedlings. It reduces moisture loss through the foliage and also protects the plants from stress or shock at transplanting time. • VaporGuard will actively protect plants down to –3 degrees of frost. If you don’t do these things now, remember not to moan about a miserable, colourless, unproductive winter!!

Galbraith Nelson now have two wins on the board and head into the Tasman Trophy rugby competition with some much needed confidence. Having beaten Stoke at home the previous weekend, Nelson won the “dog fight” against Kahurangi 15-10 in very wet conditions on Friday. Co-coach Kade Heke was pleased his side managed to string two wins together, but the first round of the Tasman Trophy has seen them draw Kahurangi again, and he knows they will be out for revenge. “It’s a good end to the first round for us but now we’ve got to maintain that. It was pouring down with rain on the weekend and it was like a dog fight. We managed to get ahead and keep them out.” The Tasman Trophy sees each of the premier Marlborough sides come into the competition for a full round robin. Kade doesn’t believe there’s a huge amount of pressure on Nelson, who are the defending champions.

Nelson is still struggling to juggle its mounting injury toll, with Ethan Blackadder the latest to be in doubt, joining James Lash who is out for the next eight to ten weeks with a torn liver. “We’re winning games now but we’re losing players to injury so it’s a bit of a catch 22 at the moment.” Nelson and Kahurangi will play this Friday at either Neale Park or Trafalgar Park, but the venue is yet to be confirmed.

New sponsors help to power Tasman Wheelers The Tasman Wheelers have been clocking up the kilometers in training, performing well in the races, and now they’ll look the part on the bike too. Support from Fresh Choice Richmond, Pomeroy’s Coffee, Tineli cycle clothing and the club’s other sponsors has resulted in a striking new

uniform, which was officially launched at the Stables on Tuesday night. It will be worn by every rider in the club, but most notably for the Benchmark Homes Elite Cycle Series teams, which head to Hanmer for the third round race on May 10, before taking a break for winter.

The Benchmark Series is the pinnacle teams racing event in the South Island, with six events, including a race in Nelson, spread across the whole calendar year. Tasman Wheelers have been able to enter strong squads in the Elite Men, Elite Women and Masters sections.

New adventure race for Murchison

Murchison will be overrun by lycra and mountainbikes this weekend when the inaugural Absolute Wilderness Adventure Race hits town. The one-day multisport race has attracted 66 teams and 198 competitors who will raft, trek and mountainbike around the Murchison district and one of the organisers, world champion adventure racer Nathan Fa'avae says the athletes are in for a treat. Forty three-person teams have entered the adventure race estimated to take around six hours while 26 have entered the expedition race which will take the fastest teams about 11 hours. "Murchison is a stunning area and it lends itself to adventure sport," Nathan says. "It's got two national parks nearby and it's got the option of rafting on the river instead of kayaking - it ticked all the boxes. "I think people in the adventure race will be surprised by how much stunning scenery there is around Murchison while the expedition racers are going to get up really high so, if it's a nice day, they'll be blown away by the views." Nathan says the race will also go through private land giving competitors a unique perspective of the area. "It can be difficult designing a course without being able to go through some private land to link it together. We were very lucky to find some community-minded land owners who helped us out."

Nathan says the race has attracted some "world class racers" and expects the pace at the front of the race to be super fast. Nathan's world champion Seagate team-mates Sophie Hart and Trevor Voyce are lining up in separate teams, while former Coast to Coast champions Richard and Elina Ussher will be racing with Stuart Lynch in team Subway. "I worked it out that the winning time for the expedition race would be around 10 hours 45 minutes but I wouldn't like to try and predict a winner." The course will be revealed to teams at the race briefing on Friday night and racing will start on at 7am on Saturday.
